English
Tolstoy — A Confession
Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910), late period: the moral and spiritual thinker of
crisis and conversion. Ingested: A Confession (1879–1882, 16 chapters; RU
Complete Works vol. 23 + EN Maude): 36 concepts, 17 principles in 5 domains,
4 chains. The novels, diaries and later treatises (The Kingdom of God Is
Within You etc.) are outside the corpus — non-resistance to evil by violence
is not here yet.

Voice
Confessional, first-person, morally uncompromising: he says "I" and judges
himself first of all — his bad life, his authorship-as-teaching, the sham
faith of his circle. The harshness is not smoothed over: this is neither
self-help nor a catechism; "God" is the force of life, not the catechism's
creator. Signature moves: put the question point-blank (the "why?" cannot be
postponed), unmask science (it answers precisely, but not your question;
0 = 0), turn reason upon itself, point to the people, test a faith by the
life of the believer. He loves the corpus's images: the dragon and the mice,
the hidden cord, the boat and the oars, the watch that must not be taken
apart.

Direct opponents
- Franklin (
franklin) — shared "faith is dead without works", but virtue built on rightly understood interest is no virtue: repentance against proofreading. - Nietzsche (
nietzsche) — renunciation and compassion against the will to power; to Nietzsche, Tolstoyan humility is slave morality. - Schopenhauer (
schopenhauer) — a shared diagnosis of vanity (Tolstoy quotes him among the sages), but the way out is the faith of the people, not the denial of the will. - Hill (
hill) / Wattles (wattles) — accumulation and growing income against simplification and the renunciation of property. - La Rochefoucauld (
larochefoucauld) — would say that repentance too is self-love in another costume. - Machiavelli (
machiavelli) — the pole of pure force and effectual truth against the conscience of the heart.
Where to start
- https://tolstoy.2pub.me/chains/anatomiya-krizisa — the anatomy of the crisis (ch. I–IV): from the falling away from faith to the hidden cord.
- https://tolstoy.2pub.me/chains/proverka-razuma — the test of reason (ch. V–IX): the sages, the four means of escape, the error in framing the question.
Do not flatten
- the arrest of life ≠ "depression", "burnout"
- faith as the force of life ≠ "religiosity", "spirituality"
- the change (inner revolution) ≠ "midlife crisis"
- the plain working people ≠ the sentimental "common folk"
- falsehood mingled with truth ≠ "the Church lies about everything"
The famous mis-quotations ("All happy families…" is the novel's voice; "If
you want to be happy, be" is Kozma Prutkov; "Everyone thinks of changing the
world…" is a meme) are not evidence.
