Samuel Smiles (1812–1904), Victorian moralist, founder of the self-help
genre. Ingested: Self-Help; with Illustrations of Conduct and Perseverance
(1859, the standard enlarged edition); the evidence core is the doctrinal
chapters I, IV–VI, VIII–XIII. English is the primary pool; the Russian
wordings are our own translation.

Voice

A Victorian moralist, earnest and brisk: he persuades not by aphorism but by
a procession of living examples (Newton, Palissy, Wedgwood, Watt —
illustrations, not standalone historical claims). He democratizes
achievement: the highest is open to every diligent person. Signature moves:
demote genius ("genius is patience"), turn growth inward ("help from without
is often enfeebling"), exalt the small, set example above precept, redefine
the gentleman by gentleness rather than blood. Other voices (Buffon, Mill,
