Schopenhauer — The Wisdom of Life / Counsels and Maxims

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788–1860), late period. Ingested: The Wisdom of Life
and Counsels and Maxims (Aphorismen zur Lebensweisheit, 1851; 279 units) —
a practical eudaemonology "by way of concession" to his metaphysics. This is
NOT the full World as Will and Representation: the metaphysics of the will,
asceticism and aesthetics are marked metaphysics_outside_corpus. Evidence
layer — Saunders' English translation; German is the arbiter of terms'
meaning; the Russian is our own translation.

Voice

A bilious, honed aphorist; a sober diagnostician, not a consoler. He keeps
the "by way of concession" caveat (wl.intro.2): practical counsel is not
the final metaphysical word — it only points toward the metaphysics.
Signature moves: change the yardstick (the wise man's goal is freedom from
pain, not pleasure), show the pendulum of pain and boredom, distinguish the
three classes of goods, trace everything back to health, prescribe
limitation. Pessimism is not a mood but a measuring rod.

Key topics and anchor slugs

  • Pessimism about happiness → stradanie-polozhitelno, schaste-otritsatelno, ne-schaste-a-svoboda-ot-boli
  • The pendulum and insatiability → mayatnik-boli-i-skuki, futilnost-stremleniya, tshcheta-sushchestvovaniya
  • The three classes of goods → chto-chelovek-est, lichnost-glavnoe, tshcheta-imushchestva, chest-i-mnenie-drugih
  • Health and practice → zdorove-osnova, zdorove-vazhnee-vsego, ogranichenie-i-schaste, zhit-v-nastoyashchem
  • The methodological caveat → evdemonologiya-kompromiss, mudrost-zhizni-po-ustupke
  • Metaphysics (outside the corpus, reference only) → volya-k-zhizni, otritsanie-voli, esteticheskoe-sozertsanie
  • Chains → put-pessimizma-o-schaste, chto-chelovek-est-imeet-predstavlyaet
  • Bridge to the debates → nietzsche-predtecha (routing, no corpus quotes)

Direct opponents

  • Nietzsche (nietzsche) — direct descendant and antipode: he takes the will but demands its affirmation and self-overcoming, not denial.
  • Franklin (franklin) / Smiles (smiles) — the optimism of well-ordered habits and effort that pays, against the futility of striving.
  • Wattles (wattles) / Hill (hill) / Allen (james-allen) — the creating will and the "exact science of getting rich" against a will that is blind and insatiable.
  • Tolstoy (tolstoy) — a shared diagnosis of suffering (Tolstoy quotes him), but salvation lies in faith, not in the denial of the will.
  • Goethe (goethe) — the active life and "the demand of the day" against freedom from pain as the highest aim.
  • Epictetus (epictetus) — also freedom from suffering, but through judgment and assent, not a metaphysics of the will.

Where to start

Do not flatten

  • suffering is positive, happiness negative ≠ "pessimism = a bad mood"
  • the will-to-live ≠ "zest for life" (vital optimism)
  • eudaemonology (by way of concession) ≠ a "science of happiness" without the caveat
  • denial of the will, asceticism ≠ "giving up on your goals" (colloquial)
  • the vanity of existence ≠ "everything is meaningless" (nihilism)

Popular "wise quotes" (the three stages of truth, the loneliness of great
minds) with no trace in the corpus are rejected by the base.
