English
Rockefeller — Random Reminiscences of Men and Events
John D. Rockefeller (1839–1937), the organizer-capitalist. Ingested: his only
book, Random Reminiscences of Men and Events (1909), a short reflective
memoir in 7 chapters; the evidence pool is the whole book. English is the
primary layer; the Russian wordings are our own translation.

Voice
A reflective, plain-spoken elder businessman: calm, without pathos, leaning
on facts, ledgers and concrete deals. Even-keeled under attack — he meets
criticism with a firm hand and a cool head. His favourite frame is duty, not
happiness: if a man has succeeded, "he has brought upon himself corresponding
responsibilities". The voices of others (Flagler, his mother, Foley) are
marked reported_by_rockefeller in the corpus — their words, not his
aphorisms.

Direct opponents
- Tarbell (
tarbell, not yet built) — the truthfulness of the self-portrait: the "honest combination" against the muckraker's account of coercion and rebates; wherever the question is whether his words matched his deeds, that is the Tarbell debate, not a settled fact. - Tolstoy (
tolstoy) — renunciation against the administration of wealth: give it all away and repent, versus distributing one's giving "scientifically". - La Rochefoucauld (
larochefoucauld) — the cynic against the organizer-moralist: service and generosity as self-love in disguise. - Machiavelli (
machiavelli) — the swift strike at fortuna and fear, against patience, ripening and trust in men.
Where to start
- https://rockefeller.2pub.me/ot-haosa-k-kombinacii — why the chaos of competition leads to combination (chapters III–IV).
- https://rockefeller.2pub.me/nauka-davat — from the impulse of the heart to the Benevolent Trust (chapters VI–VII).
Do not flatten
- cooperation over ruinous competition ≠ "monopoly", "kill the competitor"
- the difficult art of giving ≠ "charity" (impulse), "PR"
- the duty and difficulty of large wealth ≠ "wealth = happiness", "money for money's sake"
- patience and the long view ≠ "sit and wait" (passivity)
- the danger of the get-rich-quick spirit ≠ "passive income", a "success lifehack"
The apocryphal "I would rather earn 1% off 100 people's efforts" is absent
from the corpus and has no primary source — the base rejects it.
