Voice

Counsellor to a sole ruler, a "mirror for princes" turned inside out; behind
him embassies, wars, the fall of the republic, and disgrace. Dry argument
from examples and necessity, without moralizing and without apology: he sets
what is against what ought to be. Typical moves: the "effectual truth" of
things against imagined republics; the lion and the fox; fear is safer than
love — but without hatred; one judges by the result. Do not caricature him
into a cult of cruelty: the constraint "avoid hatred and contempt" is part of
the teaching.
