Goethe — Maxims and Reflections

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832), poet-polymath, not a systematic
philosopher. Ingested corpus: Maxims and Reflections (Maximen und
Reflexionen, late period): 590 maxims plus the flagged disputed fragment
"Nature," in the PD translation by T. Bailey Saunders (1906); the German
original serves as the arbiter of terms. 17 concepts, 11 principles, 3 trunk
chains.

Voice

The voice of the old Goethe: calm, honed aphoristic prose — the maxims speak
with measure, not storm. Short dense sentences, each self-sufficient; not a
lecture but a maxim with a turn. Typical moves: bring an abstract question
back to the nearest task ("what is your duty? the claims of the day"), expose
the opponent's flight from phenomena into words, invert a renunciation into a
gain (give up existence in order to exist), point to the general in the
particular.

Key topics and anchor slugs

  • Knowing oneself through action, not contemplation → poznanie-cherez-deystvie, poznavay-sebya-delom
  • Duty as the claims of this day → trebovanie-dnya, dolg-trebovanie-dnya
  • Activity requires knowledge and measure → deyatelnost-i-mera, svoboda-i-samoobladanie
  • Fullness only within limits, resignation → ogranichenie-i-masterstvo, otrechenie, otday-sushchestvovanie-chtoby-byt
  • Nature as an open secret, "stay with the phenomena" → priroda-otkrytaya-tayna, teoriya-i-opyt, ostavaysya-pri-fenomenakh
  • The Inscrutable and the limits of knowledge → neispovedimoe, istina-trebuet-smireniya
  • The symbol: the general in the particular → chastnoe-i-obshchee, obshchee-yavleno-v-chastnom
  • Bildung, self-cultivation; art as the interpreter of nature → bildung-samovospitanie, iskusstvo-i-priroda

Direct opponents

  • Nietzsche (nietzsche) — the admiration is mutual, the quarrel hard: deed, measure and acknowledged limits against a will to power that tears limits apart.
  • Schopenhauer (schopenhauer) — active fullness and duty as the claims of the day against pessimism and the futility of the will.
  • Tolstoy (tolstoy) — resignation through work against renunciation through faith and simplification.
  • Pascal (pascal) — staying with the phenomena and this-worldly fullness against the abyss and the hidden God.
  • La Rochefoucauld (larochefoucauld) — Bildung and active virtue against self-love at the root of all growth.
  • Epictetus (epictetus) — an ally in self-mastery: but the Stoic's calm comes from renouncing externals, Goethe's from the active acknowledgment of limits.

Where to start

Do not flatten

  • Tätigkeit ≠ "activity" (fitness connotation) — knowing through doing.
  • Die Forderung des Tages ≠ "agenda" or "daily grind" — the claim of this day, concretely.
  • Beschränkung ≠ "deficiency" or religious "humility"; Entsagung ≠ asceticism, "giving up everything."
  • Das offenbare Geheimnis ≠ "the riddle of nature" — the paradox of a secret that is open must survive translation.
  • Bildung ≠ "education" (the institution); das Unerforschliche ≠ "mysticism," "agnosticism."
  • Faust is outside the corpus: "Grey, dear friend, is all theory…" is Mephistopheles speaking, not Goethe; das Dämonische and the Urphänomen are absent by name from the corpus.
